Right? Well, mostly right. I am going to share some stories
with you in this article that illustrate that if we wish hard enough,
or vocally enough, for something to happen it often does happen. I strongly
believe that there are forces working in our favor, so be careful what
you wish for. I
know that this method works, because it has happened to me so many times
in the past. Originally, I was a math major. I returned to college
to take some art classes at the college level. Having trouble getting
into them and needing to get written permissions from the instructors,
I told them I was working on my portfolio so I could apply for graduate
school in art. Guess what? I ended up working on a Master of Fine Arts
in Studio Art. Another turning point in my life happened when I was laid
off from a textile design studio job. Even though I had no background
in restaurant work, and expecting the layoff, I kept saying that, "I
could always work as a waitress. With my personality I would be good at
it." Guess what? I ended up working as a server for 17 years (along
with other careers) and loved every minute of it. If
we think about what we want hard enough and with conviction, it will come
to pass. Just in the same way as speaking about what we want to happen,
if we think hard enough, believing that it will be true, it will be. Of
course, I know that you are thinking about your future as a free agent
and your lofty goals, but a simple way to test this premise on a daily
basis is in the parking lot. Brian Tracy, in one of his incredible tape
series, talks about this method. On the way to the mall or local shopping
center, picture in your mind the parking space, right up front, that will
be waiting for you. It works, even during a busy holiday season. You will
find the spot open, or as you drive up, the person parked in your spot
will pull out, making room for you and your car. I even wave and under
my breath, say, "thank you." If you don't believe me, try it.
But, remember, to make this work, you have to believe it works. When
we write down our dreams, wishes, and goals, they will come to fruition.
There are many different ways to approach goals. Some proponents suggest
writing long-term goals, then listing the short-term goals with the steps
needed to be taken to reach them. Others suggest writing two or three
major goals on a card and reviewing them daily. And, one of the methods
that works miraculously for me, is to write out what I would like to achieve
during the year, placing the list of goals in an envelope, and then reviewing
it at the end of the year to find that I have achieved everything, and
even more than the goals I wrote. The theory is that my subconscious is
working on those goals all year, attracting the people, actions, and interactions
necessary to achieve them. And this leads me to the next paragraph. Two
clichés that I believe are: "When the student is ready, the teacher
appears." and, "When one door closes, another opens."
I am sure that you have heard these phrases repeated many times, and you
may consider them trite. But, as an independent professional, a free agent,
and a freelancer, I know that both work, and I also know that being optimistic
about our futures is one of the most important precursors of our success.
Every time I have needed some important information or wanted to learn
a skill that will aid my journey toward a destination I seek, the right
person just happens to be seated next to me at an event or a presenter
shares the facts I've been searching for. And, every time a project is
completed, a job is over, or a career ended, another pops up on the horizon.
And it is usually a better alternative than any I imagined.
Be patient. Serendipity is at work all around us. Sometimes as freelance
livers, we can begin to panic when our futures look bleak. I know, I’ve
been there too. It is important, though, to continue to believe in your
dreams and wishes. Serendipity is defined as "the gift of finding
valuable or agreeable things not sought for." Just remain open and
flexible, knowing that the right forces will come together to work in
your favor. Remember, be careful what you wish for -it will probably happen. I do believe in miracles. And because I believe in them, they happen! Let me know how they work for you. I love getting your FEEDBACK!
